Shade For Beginners

Congratulations to Mattyrab for finding the meme of the day: Michelle Obama throwing shade at John Boehner. This is what Gawker correctly called "hall-of-fame shade throwing moment". However, it occurs to me that not everyone is fully versed in the art of throwing shade. It all goes back to Ball Culture. The fabulous (if very strange) Dorian Corey explains it in Paris Is Burning:

Shade is best thrown without words--preferably without even looking at the victim.

The key is to be as dismissive as possible.

If one phrase could comes close to throwing shade, it's this:

For those born to throw shade, however, even saying "Bitch, please" is easy to do without speaking.

Recently, Mariah Carey got a lot of attention for throwing shade at Nicki Minaj; however
Mimi has a long history of being a shady lady:

Mariah pales in comparison to the all-time Queen of Shade, Whitney Houston.

Bow down in fear, mortals. IN FEAR.
